The 2011 moose season was a good one for my hunting group. We went to a new area and with the help of my Vortex Razor binoculars and Vortex Viper riflescope I could easily scan the area looking for moose.Towards evening after finding a likely spot I had the privilege of harvesting a cow moose.
The next afternoon I had the most unusual experience in all the years I’ve been hunting. While I was on watch, I was calling over a meadow and had a cow call back at me out of the blue. She was so close to me the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. She was just just far enough into the pines that I could not see her. What a sound! I tried to call her out but had no success. I stayed as long as light would allow I then retreated back to the camp for a night of story telling.
The next day, to my surprise, when I returned to the same meadow, there in my foot prints from the day before were a set of cow prints and not far from them were a smaller set of calf prints. As they say, so close but so far.
Toward the end of the week my fellow hunters had the opportunity to harvest two more moose on the same day, which for anyone that has been lucky and in the same situation, it takes a lot of work to get the moose out of the woods and back to the camp, and made for a very long day.
The highlight of the hunt was being with a great group of hunters and one memory that will stay with me for many years was when 'Little Pete' harvested his very first moose, with his father and uncle there to see it.
Congratulations 'Little Pete'!
