The Real Outdoor Experience
Have you ever wondered how to prepare for a whitetail deer hunt, or wondered what type of lure will catch that big smallmouth bass? Have you ever thought, what do I do now that I have taken that wild turkey for the first time? Do you want to take your kids outdoors but you are afraid that they will not enjoy the experience? Perhaps you are already a seasoned outdoors person or want to learn more about the outdoors.
I am not an expert, I just live…

Central Ontario is an outdoorsman’s paradise – I had deer, moose and bear all within an hours’ drive of my home growing up – but what really got my hunting instincts going was ruffed grouse. Partridge my grandfather called them. As a very young boy I would walk behind him in the woods, dreading the thunder of the flush that told us we’d blown it! Hunting with a .22 or .410 we had to catch them on the ground. To this day, after hunting all kinds of big game, one of my favourite hunts is still-hunting through brambles and tag alders with frost on the ground, fall leaves in full colour – and the smell of a spent .410 shell and the feel of a warm grouse in my hand.
When I first started rifle hunting as a teenager, we weren’t allowed to hunt on Sundays and with school and part time jobs my deer hunting was limited to 2 Saturdays a year! I began bow hunting to take advantage of the longer seasons and learned very quickly how different a hunting style it is – and I became a better hunter. With a different approach and process, I also learned the importance of quality gear – optics particularly. Being able to see and judge an animal well before you could with the naked eye often makes the difference between a successful hunt and a blown opportunity. The same with being able to determine range. Clear images, regardless of weather, is a must for all of us whether using a gun or bow! I am outside in all conditions and Vortex optics have continually surpassed expectation.
With The Real Outdoor Experience, we try a lot of gear and we are proud to be pro staff and represent Vortex to the hunting industry
I grew up in a small town in Ontario, Canada. I spent my young years in Scouts Canada where I learned to respect and enjoy the outdoors. My parents never had to worry, as many days I was gone exploring the woods or just sitting by the pond behind our house. My Dad was a big part of why I love the outdoors. Every year we would experience our annual canoe trips where we paddled everything into the Canadian interior, caught fish, swam in the rivers and lakes and really experienced life the way it should be. When I was very young, I can remember waiting patiently for my Dad to return from his week long moose hunts, ready for the stories of the big one! So many lasting memories contain the outdoors and I can’t imagine it not being part of my life today.
As I grew older and had a family of my own, it was just natural for me to take my kids outdoors and guide them through their own outdoor experiences. The passion that I have for the outdoors, and the need to help people, led me to creating The Real Outdoor Experience. This show is all about sharing our experiences and teaching those who may not have had mentors to help them experience the outdoors for themselves.
One very important lesson that I learned along the way is the value of taking the best possible equipment with you on these outdoor experiences. This certainly will increase the fun factor not having to worry! I remember the days when quality was not the priority, price was. Those lessons led to some frustrating moments! We always speak about the ethical shot and Vortex Optics can help make that happen. I am so pleased to be part of the Vortex family! Vortex Optics have everything you should be looking for in optics, quality, fit and finish, fair price, clarity and a company that stands behind their products!
Take your kids, or someone you know into the outdoors, teach them, give them the opportunity to experience the real world, away from electronics and the meaningless distractions of life, and always…
